Dr Kens Vet Clinic (with easy parking and wheel chair access) routinely performs desexings for in house Para Hills and Adelaide Vets on Wheels patients. Desexing is the most commonly performed surgery in any vet clinic and requires a skilled Veterinary Surgeon as well as trained staff and a properly equipped surgery and surgical theatre.

Vaccinations in Para Hills West are the BEST thing you can do for your pet. Prevention is better than the cure and Vaccinations are certainly the best insurance against diseases that can be life threatening to your new Puppy or Kitten.
HOW AND WHEN?
Your Puppy or Kitten begins to lose protection from the Colostrum/Mother’s milk at about 6 weeks of age and it is then that vaccinations should begin to provide the best protection. Please Call Dr Kens Vet Clinic in Para Hills West on 82816400 to set an appointment to protect your new Puppy or Kitten. At Dr Kens Vet Clinic we recommend a series of three vaccinations which protect against four diseases Parvo, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Kennel Cough. This is called a C 5 vaccination. C stands for Canine. The number FIVE designates the number of components in the vaccine. Kennel Cough vaccine is comprised of two components and so it is called C 5 instead of C 4.
1. At 6 - 8 weeks of age
2. At 10 – 12 weeks of age
3. At 16 – 14 weeks of age
Followed by yearly boosters. Dr Kens Vet Clinic sends out yearly reminders for this. Reminders are sent to all areas we service including Para Hills West, Para Hills, Salisbury, Salisbury East, Salisbury North, Gulf View Heights, Golden Grove, Greenwith, Modbury, Modbury North, and including most of the Adelaide area. In the Para Hills West area all of these diseases can be a problem. It is not enough to keep your pet away from other animals or inside to protect them from exposure as these diseases are spread in many different ways such as by wind or on your shoes.

We see our fair share of dental problems here at Dr Kens Vet Clinic and to be honest I would rather work on preventing dental problems in the first place. Dogs, cats, rabbits and all pets in general are very brave and don’t complain or let you know that they are experiencing dental or gum pain.
Periodontal Disease
The most prevalent form of dental disease in pets is the formation of plaque (hard mineral and bacteria accumulations on the tooth gum line) this leads to inflamed and infected gums. This is called Gingivitis. In advanced stages this leads to tooth decay and ultimately tooth loss.
What are the signs of Dental Disease?
- Refusal to eat hard foods
- Bad breath
- Soreness around the mouth if touched
- Bleeding Gums
- Tooth Loss
- Severe gum or tooth infections can lead to Kidney and Heart problems as well
Sometimes the early signs of Periodontal Disease will go unnoticed until it is advanced and the Vet needs to intervene by dental scaling (available at Dr Kens Vet Clinic) using an ultrasonic scaler and or pulling affected teeth.

Having worked as a full time Emergency Vet for over four years Dr Ken Robinson is well acquainted with emergency situations such as acute poisonings, envenomation, snake bite, tick bite, emergency obstetrics and trauma cases. Trauma patients make up a large part of emergency veterinary medicine including car accidents and fight wounds. Many of these Cases require Shock treatment and/or emergency surgery. Other conditions such as “Bloat” (Gastric Dilation Volvulus), Cesarian Sections and breach births are also a common part of emergency medicine. The list is long.
Because of this Dr Kens Vet Clinic is well equipped and ready to handle any emergency situation during normal office hours. While we cater to “out of hours in-patients” i.e. care for hospitalised patients 24/7, our consulting hours are limited to normal hours. Starting at 08:00 am to 6pm. Emergencies after these hours should be seen by your nearest “out of hours”/24 hour emergency clinic. See also our listing.

Putting your pet to sleep
Deciding “when is it time” is one of the hardest decisions any Vet has to make. I’ve been a Vet for over 25 years and it still hasn’t gotten any easier after all this time. The same is true for every pet owner out there. I have met many people over the years and it just isn’t an easy thing to deal with.
As a mobile vet coming to owners homes, at home Euthanasia is something I am asked to do very often. Probably because it allows your pet to spend its last moments in the comfort of his/her familiar surroundings and near family and loved ones.
